The research topic is at the cutting edge of fungal science, filamentous growth, macromorphology, and sustainable production. The project is funded for 36 months from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft under the supervision of Professor Cairns. The work will establish how pelleted morphologies of Aspergillus niger emerge during fermentation, and how their internal structure impacts production of protein and citric acid. This project will develop a library of mutants, conduct extensive phenotypic screens, quantitatively assess the impact of their encoded proteins on growth, and generate transcriptional networks to probe the underlying processes. The candidate will collaborate closely with national collaborators to establish genetic control of pelleted growth, structure, and productivity.
